What is this place?

It started out in 2018 as a language-learning blog, where I would share tips on learning Korean, and reviews of my favourite resources.

Nowadays, it’s my little playground. I spend most of my time doing something related to languages – reading, writing, teaching, translating… I wanted to create a space where I could do all of the above. A place where I can share all these random thoughts I have about languages in general, translations of songs I love and random snippets from the books I’m reading, or reviews of my favourite webtoons and movies.

My virtual home, basically.

Why the Lunar Treehouse?

It took me really long to come up with a new name for the site, but I decided that the most important thing was that it made sense to me – even if it sounds a bit nonsensical to others. After all, it’s my home.

I thought of what I wanted this place to be, and decided it should be a playground – my playground, a place where I get to write whatever I want, whenever I want – and a treehouse sounds about right. I’ve always wanted a treehouse (which sadly is not a thing in Malaysia) growing up. I found them fascinating, and there’s just something really magical about having your secret hideout, a space to call your own.

As for ‘Lunar’ – well, that’s another long story. Originally, I was going to name the site either ‘My Little Treehouse’ or ‘The Treehouse’, but they were too generic and probably already taken. So I thought of adding my name to it – Heather’s Treehouse – but that didn’t sound right either.

And then I remembered the name Luna. It was given to me by one of my favourite French youtubers a few months ago, when I asked her how to pronounce ‘Heather’ in French. Apparently, it’s really hard for French people to pronounce ‘Heather’, and the result usually sounds nothing like the actual name itself, so she offered to help me come up with an alias (?)/name that would be easier for francophones to pronounce.

Heather (the flower) is called Calluna in French, so she thought Luna would be perfect for me. Though I haven’t actually used the name anywhere, I like the sound of Luna’s Treehouse – it has a nice ring, and I’ve always loved the moon.

I decided then to change the name to Lunar Treehouse. It makes me picture a glowing treehouse floating in space, surrounded by dusts and stars. I like the image, and it’s random enough that it probably doesn’t exist anywhere else yet. And so, the Lunar Treehouse is born.

Master of the House

A little bit about myself. I’m Heather. I’ve been a graphics designer and a copywriter, and I’m now self-studying translation while teaching Korean to beginners and lower intermediate learners on the side. I speak Mandarin Chinese, English, Malay, Korean and I’m learning French.

In my free time, I like to read. I write sometimes, though I’m not very good at it. I get really excited about good lyrics. I also like video games, even though I’m really, really bad at them.
